Did you know that wetlands cover less than 3% of Colorado, yet they provide habitat for more plant and animal species than any other land cover type in the state?
Join Wilderness Workshop and Eagle River Watershed Council for a hands-on exploration of the Homestake Valley, which is home to ancient fens! They provide incredible biodiversity, native flora and fauna, and are home to numerous threatened species. In the midst of an ongoing drought, inventorying and understanding wetlands – a critical carbon sink in a changing climate – allows us to better advocate for these places now and into the future.
What: Homestake Valley Participatory Science Day
When: Saturday, July 8 from 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Where: Homestake Valley, near Red Cliff
Cost & Registration: Free and open to the public, but registration is required. Click here to register
We will have the help and expertise of scientists from the Colorado Natural Heritage Project, as well as naturalists from Walking Mountains Science Center, and other local experts. Also known as a “Bioblitz”, participatory science projects like this provide a chance to get your hands dirty while contributing to biodiversity science. Using simple technology, we’ll try to find and document as many species as possible. You’ll leave with a greater appreciation of the plants and animals that call the Valley home. The more we understand about this special place, the better we can advocate for protecting it. This event will occur rain or shine; please be prepared to get your hands – and feet – dirty! The walk through the wetlands won’t be long, but be prepared to be on your feet for a while. Transportation (from Minturn) and lunch will be provided; additional details will be sent following registration.
