Current threats to river health, including population growth and climate change, challenge us to face the reality of a dwindling water supply, compromised water quality, and the loss of plants and animals that make rivers their home. Here at Eagle River Coalition, education is vital to empower the community from young to old to take ownership of the Eagle and Upper Colorado River Watersheds and protect the watershed from threats. By hosting hands-on learning experiences, offering email education platforms, ways to engage on social media and online resources we make sure that the community can explore the watersheds through whatever avenue fits their lifestyle best.
Our programming is dynamic and forward-thinking, allowing us to meet the changing needs of our watershed and our community. Read on to learn more about how to get involved and learn more about the Eagle River and Colorado River Watersheds.
Community Education Programs
Our community education programs are offered to the public to engage with our local watershed. Opportunities include tours, community science days and presentations. To stay up to date on these opportunities please visit our events page!
Learn via Email
We offer a few ways to stay engaged with the Eagle River Coalition via email!
Throughout the year we send out monthly E-newsletters. In these e-newsletters you can expect to get updated on any watershed news happening within Eagle River Watershed, all of our upcoming events and news about water in the west. This is also where we announce all of our events FIRST, so you can get a chance to register before anyone else.
Once runoff starts we offer weekly River Reports. In these emails, you will learn more about the state of streamflows in Eagle County over the summer compared to the average.
Once the warm temperatures arrive, we send out daily temperature alerts. As air temperatures rise and streamflows decline, keeping an eye out for high river temperatures is extremely important for the health of our watershed!

Explore Water Efficiency through Beyond Lawn
Did you know that…
The Beyond Lawn program is a shared initiative with Eagle River Coalition and the Eagle County Conservation District. It supports landowners and HOAs by helping reduce landscaping water use to reduce the impact on our natural water resources and to save property owners money as the cost of providing water service increases.
Real Time River Report
With rising drought risk, hotter summers, and uncertain river flows, we’ve created a new tool for users in the Eagle River Valley. This easy-to-use resource lets you view real-time river flows and temperatures—and compare them to historical averages. Stay informed and make better decisions for your water use and recreation.
Water Law in a Nutshell Workshop
April/May
Each spring we offer a day-long workshop that covers all aspects of the law related to water rights and
ditch rights as applied in Colorado. Subject matter includes the appropriation, perfection, use, limitations, attributes, abandonment and enforcement of various types of water rights. Additional subject matter will include special rules for groundwater and reservoirs, public rights in appropriated water, interstate compacts and more.
Eagle Mine Tour
June/July, even years
On even years, we host the bi-annual Eagle Mine Tour. Located between Minturn and Red Cliff, the mine once extracted lead and zinc. Following it’s closing in 1984, the town of Gilman was abandoned and the mine flooded, leaking heavy metals into the Eagle River. This event caused the mine to be designated as a superfund site and led concerned citizens to form the Eagle River Environmental Business Alliance (EREBA), a predecessor to what would become the Eagle River Coalition. This event is the only opportunity for the general public to enter the mine site and the town of Gilman.
Homestake Community Science Day
June/July
Each summer, we invite the community to the wetlands of the Homestake Valley to learn about the native insects, toads, and birds that call this incredible area home. Experts share the importance of the Homestake Valley and participants help scientists capture a snapshot of the Valley’s biodiversity at a critical time.
Eagle River Water Festival
September
During the fall, we host the Eagle River Water Festival for all 5th Graders in the County! During this day students have the opportunity to learn about water from local professionals like water engineers, raft and fly fishing guides and sustainability experts. Topics include how to fly fish, why soil saves our watershed, how to tie knots, the importance of macroinvertebrates and MORE!
This day is completely free to schools and we rely on the support of grants and community sponsors to keep it this way. Interested in supporting this event? Click Here!
Wild & Scenic Film Festival
November
Previously held in April, we will be moving this event to November in 2026!
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a fundraiser for education throughout the year. The night is filled with engaging conversations, refreshments, the Peak Flow Prediction Contest, and amazing films focusing on the importance of water.
