Thanks to the help of 17 community volunteers, including residents, Riverwalk at Edwards property owners, Certified Master Gardeners, professional landscapers, and folks who just wanted to get out and do some good work, we planted 575 water wise plants. Ranging from shrubs and bushes like Rabbit Brush and sage to grasses like bluestem and Indian Rice Grass to native plants like penstemon and primroses, the garden will demonstrate to passersby just how much variety can exist in a water wise garden that has been “Coloradoscaped.”
Thank you to project supporters, including the Riverwalk Property Owners Association, Eagle River Fund, Beyond Lawn Program, CSU Extension, Eagle County Conservation District, Eagle River Coalition, Gore Range Landscaping, Gallegos Corporation, Edwards Metropolitan District and Betty Ford Alpine Gardens.
This opportunity has passed.
Time: The project will take place 10AM to 4PM. You can volunteer for a slot below or the full day.
Location: The Riverwalk at Edwards
Project Basics: We are seeking volunteers to install plants as part of the Riverwalk Water Wise Demonstration Garden. The objective is to reduce the quantity of water used for irrigation by replacing nonfunctional turf grass with native vegetation. By incorporating stakeholders from across the public and private sectors, this project transforms a nonfunctional turf space into to a place that inspires similar action on a broader scale. For the planting day, volunteers will be asked to dig holes in prepared soil, install the plant, and backfill with soil, as well as other tasks as necessary. Prior gardening experience is not necessary, as professional landscapers will be onsite to place the plants and answer questions, but basic knowledge of planting or an interest in gardening would be helpful.
Important Notes: Please be prepared to work on your hands and knees in the dirt in both sun and light rain, as weather tends to fluctuate. Please note the backup date in the event of severe weather is Sunday, June 16 – we will contact you the morning of Saturday, June 15 by email and phone if we must postpone. We recommend wearing long pants, close-toed shoes, long sleeves, sunglasses, and a full-coverage hat. You may bring your own work gloves and a shovel (we will have extras of gloves and tools). Please bring a reusable water bottle and snacks or lunch if you wish. Light snacks, sunscreen, and water will be provided.
Registration is required.
